No. 3-59 Academic Freedom - Prof. D. Baker reported for the Instructional Policy Committee which had formalized a resolution originally submitted by Prof. S. Price.

A long discussion took place and several modifications were proposed. An abstract of this discussion is attached. As finally adopted, Proposal 3-59 reads:

The Michigan College of Mining and Technology subscribes to the principal that institutions of higher learning are conducted for the common good, and that common good depends in part upon academic freedom, which is the free search for truth and its free exposition whether in research or the classroom.

If at any time evidence is presented that the activities of the faculty (as a group or individually) are contrary to the best interests of the College, then the proper administrators should feel obligated to initiate counsel in private with that individual or group. In the case of unresolved conflict it is the recommendation of the Senate that the issue shall be referred to a Senate Committee on Academic Freedom.

No. 6-60 Proficiency Examinations - Prof. J. Oswald reported for the Curricular Policy Committee that a meeting of the committee had been held without a solution being reached.

Dr. Van Pelt directed the proposal to be included in the agenda for the next Senate meeting.
